Meg Cabot actually WROTE a midevial smut which i found hilarious because, really, it's not her style. It was good, though it mad me MAD because I had a story going with about the same storyline. I stopped reading it for a month when I found out and started back up again when i couldn't take it anymore XD
I haven't heard of those authors, so thank you for the new material ^^

Okay, here goes.

If you're interested in Vampire books...don't come to me. I'm completely uninterested in such things.

I also have to disagree with Melissa on the Mercedes Lackey thing...she's a bit overrated, I'm sorry to say. her literature isn't quite as well-told as, say, Ursula K.Le Guinn. She's one of the most high-class Fantasy novelists out there, and though there are many, it's hard to tell which one is the best.
So if you want a vivid imagination with spiritual insight, go to Le Guinn.
Diana Wynne Jones is is also especially renowned for insightful plotlines, but she's more interested in writing the characters more than the environment. She's best known for Howl's Moving castle, WHICH I am still disappointed in Studio Ghibli for downright DESTROYING. Even Diana says "That movie is their story...Not mine". I have to agree with her completely.
If you want something more adult, look to C.S. Lewis. But like I said, being a mature writer, his stories tend to be WAY over the head of even a 20-year-old. It's not sex or anything...It's -insight-. You have to have an incredibly open mind to everything and everyone if you're going to read his stuff.
Another Fantasy novelist with INCREDIBLE literary skills would be Terry Pratchett. He has the best sense of humour out there, and I personally think he's funnier than Douglas Adams. +GASP! SHOCK!+

SPEAKING of high-class Sci-Fi authors, I'm not even done yet.
Joan D.Vinge is one of my favorite Science Fiction authors. She writes some fantasy too, but her Sci-Fi strikes me the most. She has a very unique style of writing and never seems to make any form of syntax errors even with her unusual pacing. My favorite thing about her is that she can write short-stories PERFECTLY. Not many people can do that. Vignettes are incredibly difficult.
Another sci-fi author that also specializes in Fantasy (though again I enjoy the science fiction from him more) is Tad Williams, but he's more mature than even C.S. Lewis. My first Tad Williams read was the "Otherland" series, and my God was I SHOCKED. Some of the scenes were absolutely horrifying and choking. Also, he's the heaviest writer I know of and if you miss a SINGLE line in his stories, you'll be left confused later on. Trust me on that. So don't pick up Tad Williams if you want a light novel.
C.J. Cherryh is a really super fun author. She goes into so much detail about all the planets she invents in her head, creates languages, politics, everything, and all her characters are so precious to me. Even the ones that die, and even the villains. If you really want adventure go to her, because Cherryh just knows how to tickle a person's funny bone.

Since you seem to like Stephen King so much, I suggest you take a look at some other Horror novelists. Actually, I don't really enjoy King's writing style so much. Sometimes the things he does in his stories can be just plain unnecessary.
I have to say one thing though. If you want a really hard-hitting Horror novel, I suggest you go for H.P. Lovecraft. The kids of today may not know who the hell he is, but Lovecraft is the FATHER of all Horror. Poe is just a faker compared to him. Lovecraft's stories brought forth the Cult fandom of the Cthulhu Mythos, and even Stephen King got involved in that little cult. In fact if you look to King, even he says that Lovecraft is the root of all gut-turning Horror.

Now that's all I can actually think of -for now- but I know there are many others I can mention. I've read so many books, light and heavy, well-written and poorly written, I don't know what to do with all those names I've collected. So I might come back with other suggestions.

Often times I see Robert Ramkins is compared to Terry Pratchett. You would seriously enjoy his Brentford...er...'trilogy'. xD

Tom Holt is also very humorous, but he's not quite as well spoken as the others I've mentioned.

I've actually been taking a liking to Derek Landy's 'Skulduggery Pleasant". Usually I don't go for books for young teens, but in this case I have to say he has a -very- cute way of writing. Sadly, he doesn't write battle sequences too well but I'm sure you can overlook that. Battles are DIFFICULT. So if you want something light-hearted and for young adults, Landy is your guy.

E.D. Baker is also very funny and well-spoken. My first Baker book was "The Frog Princess", I'm sure you must have heard of that, but I recently picked up a hard copy of "The Salamander Spell" too, and that was just rich with syntax jokes. Kind of a difficult read for those who aren't exactly used to high-level books, but she does water things down for younger readers sometimes. She's very even-handed.

Next, Clive Barker. Another one of those pulp horror guys, kind of shoddy compared to Lovecraft (though in my eyes EVERYONE is shoddy compared to him) but he has a great sense of depth, continuity, and culpability. I seriously like his style, and if you're ever to read his stuff I would suggest something like Hellraiser. That'll keep you on your toes. (B

ALSO... I just have to get this one out there, because I both enjoy his writing and agree with his point of view. Robert Anton Wilson...He wrote a post-modern sci-fi adventure story based off CONSPIRACY THEORIES. He's seriously the most daring writer out there. I'd have to say his Illuminatus trilogy is far greater than the Da Vinci code. He's more well-written, not quite as unpleasant, and he's downright FUNNY in places. But he's also very adult, so watch it...

The last one I'll mention, and this is where I'll stop, is the Gormenghast series by Mervyn Peake. I have to tell you now that Gormenghast is HUMONGOUS, intricate, and... way over your head. It was way over -my- head when I read it. Also, you might want to stop in the middle of the story...It starts out dark and it gets darker as you keep going. Sent me into fits of blubbering tears once or twice. It tackles a lot of really disturbing and upsetting things, so you'd best go easy on it if you ever do find a copy and read it. But whether you try and tackle it or not is entirely up to you... xD

Hmmm.... what exactly is Hellraiser? I is interested B3 I've never heard of the author, I'm surprised you think Stephen King to be "shoddy" compared to him XD I mean, I understand why a big horror fan would dislike him, and I too think sometimes he gets a little... weird.... with his stories. A Buick 8 was pretty much the worst horror book I've ever read. Still. Others he's written? Chilling :)

The dark one kinda sounds like my kinda book, actually.... I dunno.... I LOVED the book The Ninth Circle, about an assassin, and it was soooo dark, a college level book that was AMAZINGLY easy 0_0
